Planetary Biodiversity Inventory Solanum: A worldwide treatment (http://www.nhm.ac.uk/solanaceaesource/)

Funding opportunities

The PBI Solanum project encourages participation from Solanum specialists worldwide, including graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and professional botanists. Collaborators are eligible for small awards from the PBI: Solanum project that support completion of the worldwide Solanum monograph.

Funding activities

  1. Travel to museums and herbaria to examine types and other specimens.
  2. Field work to collect Solanum specimens (travel money, supplies, small equipment).
  3. Image capture of types and other important specimens.
  4. Costs of publication preparation (including illustration costs and online access to reprints) for contributing authors.

To request funding

Please send the following information via email or regular mail to one of the four principal investigators. Applications should be in English, Spanish, or Portuguese.

  1. Name of applicant;
  2. Email address;
  3. Phone number;
  4. Fax number;
  5. Institution and mailing address;
  6. Total amount requested in US dollars;
  7. Project starting date;
  8. Project ending date;
  9. Social Security Number (US citizens and residents only);
  10. A brief description (see guidelines below).
  11. References -
    • students should include an email or letter of support from their advisor;
    • If work is to be done in a museum or laboratory away from your home institution, a supporting letter from the curator or collaborating researcher is recommended.
Brief description guidelines

Include a brief description (no more than 3 pages) of the activity for which funding is requested. This should explain the relevance of the activity to the overall goals of the PBI: Solanum project and clearly state the expected outcomes in terms of field collections, species to be monographed, and/or specimens databased or imaged. Include specific information on the subgroups of Solanum to be examined, either by taxonomic category (sections, species) or geographic range, and explain how the funds requested will be used to complete the project.

Include an itemized budget in US dollars broken down into the categories of travel (airfare, per diem expenses or hotel and meals, vehicle rental, supplies, labor, other). The budget sheet can be in addition to the 3 page limit of the project description.

Restrictions on air travel

Any air travel to, from, between, or within a country other than the US that is supported by this project must be provided by, or under a code-sharing agreement with, a US-flag air carrier if one is available. Tickets or documentation for e-tickets must identify the air carrier’s designator code and flight number. Airfare may be requested in the initial application without this information, but no plane tickets can be actually purchased without this documentation. If no US-flag carrier is available, please indicate this in your application.

Additional requirements
Databasing or imaging specimens

If the activity involves databasing or imaging specimens, participants should contact the PIs to ensure that their platforms and image capture methods are compatible with the formats of the overall PBI: Solanum project. A database template is available from the project PIs and is required for use unless an existing herbarium standard databasing program (e.g. Tropicos) is already being used.

Project output

Participants are expected to release species descriptions and images in a timely manner for posting on the project website in addition to authoring and reviewing manuscripts in print form.

Notification of application

You should receive an email notification when your application is received. If you do not receive notification within 7 days that your application has been received, please contact one of the principal investigators at the addresses, emails, and/or phone numbers given.
